Obituary: Samuel Kenneth Anderson attended Howard High School in Wilmington, Delaware where he first found his love of singing. He was very active in the choir. Ken served in the 7th Army Special Services in Germany and received an honorable discharge in 1954. He received his early education in Public School #5, #29, and Howard High School. which, he entered the U.S. Armed Forces Special Services Unit from 1952 to 1954 in Nurenberg, Germany. Kenneth entertained military troops throughout Europe in a 50s style quartet and also sang Paul Robesons Negro spirituals and songs. In 1954, Ken then became employed by The Delaware State Psychiatric Hospital (Farnhurst) as an attendant, and went on to work at the Delaware Hospital as an orderly in the operating room. This led him to continue and became a Certified Registered Nurse, in 1962. Ken then entered nursing school to study Anesthesiology, graduating from Harlem Hospital. He moved to the town of Port Jefferson in Long Island, NY to join the anesthesia staff of Mather Hospital, in 1963. In 1973, Ken earned a BS degree in from the University of New York at Stony Brook, and was part of the faculty of the School of and Sciences. To his dismay, he noted there were no black students enrolled in the program, nor were there any faculty members of color at the school. He became a strong voice to recruit African American students into the school and established outreach programs to attract these students. Ken also joined a diverse array of organizations in this time, from the Boy Scouts of America to the Suffolk Civil Liberties Board. He authored a Bill of Rights, which was approved by the Suffolk Legislature – an initiative far ahead of its time. As if this was not enough, he was elected as President of the Brookhaven NAACP in 1976. In the same year, he became one of the first Americans invited to visit China, being recognized for his dedicated work in his community, and he toured that country for a month. Kens perseverance and dedication ultimately led to one of his greatest achievements – a Masters Degree in Social Welfare, from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, in 1978. Of Kens many accomplishments, the one he was most proud of was his induction into Phi Beta Kappa – the nations most prestigious Honor Society, in 1999. Phi Beta Kappa is recognized for high attainments in Liberal Scholarship. Ken also sang professionally. His talents ultimately came to the attention of Pete Seeger, the world-renowned musician and social activist. Ken and Pete became good friends, and they performed together on numerous occasions. both shared a love of spiritual music, and mutual appreciation of Petes good friend, Paul Robeson. Pauls music was a constant in Kens performances and speaking engagements. Pete once commented, Kenneth had a voice in 10, 000 – high praise from one our Nations most prolific songwriters and champions of social justice. The one constant in Kens life was his love of music and his ability to convey that love and passion through the strength of his booming voice. Ken was predeceased by his wife Arlene Anderson and his brother, Phillip Anderson, Sr. Ken is survived by his sister, Gwendolyn Evans Taylor of Wilmington, DE, and his children: Sandra Clark (Jesse) of Middletown, DE; Samuel Kenneth Anderson, Jr. (Vrana) of Newark, DE; Nana Marie Bey (Wayne) of New Castle, DE; Cynthia Sturgis (Lawrence) of New Castle, DE; and Michael C.
